Larimer County Emergency Updates: Galena Fire

Post by EG Bound Alerts »

The following information update has been made for: Galena Fire

The incident originally called the Soldier Canyon Fire was in fact named the Galena Fire. All old info previously posted for this fire will be pasted below and the incident called Soldier Canyon Fire will be taken down.

The Soldier Canyon Estates area, evacuated first when this incident began, is now open and residents may return. This announcement originally excluded the Galena Ct. area but that is apparently open as well. Our wind is expected to continue until around midnight when it should begin to subside and our humidity will recover somewhat over night. Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better and calmer day with even a chance of precipitation. No other updates at this time for the south end of the fire near Inlet Bay.

04:39 PM - Mar 15 Our fire is estimated at perhaps 800 acres. The strong gusty winds continue to be a problem. Currently there are road blocks at Lodgepole and Co. Rd 23 on the noth end of the fire and at Shoreline Drive and 38E and Skyline and 38E on the south part of the fire evac area. On the south end, people, are being allowed in with escorts to retrieve medicines, people and animals but cannot stay in their residences until the evacuation is lifted. At this time there is absolutely no information or guesses as to when that will be. We will try to keep this updated with new information when we get it and will also put emergency information on the County Emergency Info Line at 498-5500.

03:15 PM - Mar 15 Additional evacuation notifications have been sent by Fort Collins for the area west of Horsetooth Reservoir on the south side and those evacuations are being conducted now. The fire is being pushed from the north by strong winds. The area affected is north of Co Rd 38e. This includes all feeder streets to Shoreline Drive in the vicinity of Inlet Bay and north up to and including the Continental Cir. area. It is not now known how many homes this involves. The evacuation center and shelter remains Cache la Poudre Elementary in LaPorte but other options may be explored as circumstances warrant.

02:28 PM - Mar 15 We have another fire in the vicinity of Co. Rd 54 G and east of Overland Trail in LaPorte - possibly in the Eddy lane area. That would put it immediately south of the Plantorium Greenhouse. Poudre Fire has responded; no further information is available at this time.

01:00 PM - Mar 15 As of 1:00 p.m. Friday, it looks like we have approximately 50 persons who have been evacuated from the fire vicinity. The evac center / shelter for the time being has been designated as the Cache la Poudre Elementary School gynmasium in LaPorte. This was one of our prncipal shelters last year during the High Park Fire. Personnel are on scene now at the school and Red Cross staff is responding.

12:43 PM - Mar 15 We have a fire buring in and around the Soldier Canyon area west of Horsetooth Rservoir. Poudre Fire Authority and Larimer County Emergency Services and Lory State Park employees are responding and on scene. Apparently at least 40+ acres are now involved with at least one structure having been affected. Unknown if this is a house or not and the extent of involvement. We also have sent emergency phone notifications to the area advising residents of the situation and some residents have been evacuated by fire personnel and Deputies on scene. We will continue to update this as we gather additionnal information.

The following information update has been made for: Galena Fire

Things have calmed down for the evening but we still have hand crews actively working the north side of the fire and parts of the west flank. Also, engines continue to work the southern area in the Inlet Bay vicinity. We're hoping to avoid any gusty winds associated with some incoming weather - which will hopefully bring some precipitation, or at the least higher humidity. In the absence of further developments this evening, this will be our last update until tomorrow morning after the briefing from the Incident Command. Our Joint Information Center (498-5500) has been manned this evening to answer your questions but we will depart shortly and return to answer phones tomorrow morning. In the meantime, dialing the 498-5500 line will give you a recording of the latest information.

Unfortunately high winds will be back tomorrow, hopefully offset by higher humidity and possible rain.

The following information update has been made for: Galena Fire

All evacuations for the Galena Fire will be lifted at 8:00 p.m. tonight (Saturday, March 16). Residents in the affected area will remain on pre-evacuation and should be prepared to leave again if necessary. No credentials will be needed. Residents are asked to drive with caution. While roadblocks will be taken down, deputies will remain in the area to control traffic.

All pre-evacuation notices are still in effect for those areas previously notified.
The evacuation center at Cache le Poudre school has now been closed.

A Type 3 fire management team took over management of the fire this morning with Tony Simons of the Larimer County Sheriff's Office Emergency Services as the Incident Commander.

There was no significant growth on the north, south or east sides of the fire today although some movement was seen on the west side of the fire.

The fire remains at approximately 750-1,000 acres with 45% containment. Approximately 110 firefighters on scene.

No structures have been damaged and there have been no injuries.

A type 2 helicopter was utilized today and will be available tomorrow. A second type 2 helicopter is on order for tomorrow.

The cause of the fire has been determined to be human caused but the details are still under investigation. Investigators have determined the fire was definitely NOT caused by a controlled or prescribed burn.

Lory State Park, Horsetooth Mountain Park, Inlet Bay and South Bay remain closed.

There will be night patrols on the fire tonight. We expect to see significant activity in the interior of the fire with active flames, some tree torching and lots of smoke.

There was little or no precipitation on the fire today. Winds are expected to pick up tonight and are predicted to be 20-30 miles per hour tomorrow which will result in increased smoke in the Fort Collins area.

The Galena Fire Information Center will remain open until 6:00 p.m. tonight and will not reopen unless there is a significant change in conditions. Updated information will continue to be available via a recording at the 970-498-5500 information line.

No additional press briefings are planned unless conditions change.

This will be the final update of the day unless there are significant changes in conditions.
